Mark Carroll: 7 Origin games for NSW
Front-rower: David Klemmer
He hasn’t played Origin yet but I think Klemmer should be blooded. If he can control his aggression he could be anything. I don’t know if he’d start the match but if you brought him on off the bench he’d definitely add plenty of tenacity. You need at least one big guy on the bench these days and I think Klemmer could make a difference.
Bradley Clyde: 12 Origin games for NSW
Back-rower: Luke Lewis
Lewis is experienced, he has speed and skill and is tough. He’s a specialist lock who can add a dimension to the team because apart from his experience he really knows the role. Lock has become a less specialised position over the years but when you have a player who works as equally as well with the backs as the forwards and who can create play as well as hit a hole they’re what you call a genuine footy player.
Steve Mortimer: 9 Origin games for NSW
Halves: Blake Austin
I’m very impressed by Adam Reynolds at Souths but he’s injured. I know there is Mitchell Pearce and Trent Hodkinson who have both played for NSW but we don’t seem to have a lot of competition for halves. I like Blake Austin, the five-eighth at Canberra, and think he must be in the top 17. I saw him play in the City-Country game at Wagga and I thought he was outstanding.
Ryan Girdler: 10 Origin games for NSW
Three-quarters: William Hopoate
Michael Jennings and Josh Morris will be picked if they’re available but selecting wingers is tough. Daniel Tupou has been in good form and is in a strong position to maintain his spot. We need big bodies and while I think Alex Johnston will represent his state one day we need size, that’s why I’d pick Hopoate. He’s played better since going from fullback at Parramatta back to the centres. He”d do the job for NSW.
Tim Brasher: 21 Origin games for NSW
Josh Dugan is in form and fullback is his best position. We saw him play on the wing in City-Country but these days wing is a more specialised position than it was in my time. If Dugan was injured I’d give the spot to Brett Stewart. I think we’ll see James Tedesco there if not this year then next year. He’s class. Tedesco could even be one of those guys they slot on the wing because he can play there.
